From the Guardian, an article on learning to ski, age 50.
All well and good, but it's height that's the real hinderance to learning to ski, if you're starting as an adult. High center of gravity is not a good thing in this situation. My attempt to learn was in the Czech Republic. The guy manning the lift was convinced that I was California; what else could explain my inability to make it down the bunny slope in under twenty minutes than the fact that I had never seen snow before? I'm from Upstate New York, so I'm quite familiar with the stuff. I'm simply a bad skiier.
It was falling OFF the ski lift that was the most embarassing. I had to roll out of the way, as I hadn't learned to stand yet, to ensure that the skiiers behind didn't ski over me. Little European children skiiers. Pathetic.
