Excellent rundown here (from excellent aviation industry blog enplaned) of the long-haul 777 vs A340 debate. In short, Boeing smash!
I like both aircraft, although I haven't experienced the back of the bus in the Airbus, it's relatively comfortable there in the triple 7. It's silly, but in many ways the biggest advances for passengers are simple things, like how much quieter these planes are in flight than older models. Seatback movies, I could care less. Not even "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days" will make a 13 hour flight any less miserable.
Is this a twin-engine vs four-engine thing? I knew a pilot who wouldn't fly on twin-engine planes for long-haul flights. Real planes have four engines, he insisted. Anyway, I think that with the new A340 variant, it's simply too soon to tell. Didn't everyone proclaim the 777 a dud when it debuted?
